Memorial Day picnic, delayed

Date:
Sunday, May 31st, 2009
It's a longstanding tradition to hold our Memorial Day picnic on Memorial Day, and as a result we don't see some friends who also have a longstanding commitment to be elsewhere. Well that changed this year when we had to reschedule the picnic when Paul came down with a nasty virus just before the scheduled date. The raindate was Sunday, May 31st. It was good to wait until Paul was up to particpating.Memorial Day 2009

Saturday night in Manayunk often means pub crawl, so William wisely suggested heading up Ridge Avenue to find a dinner spot more suitable for us old fogies. Good call. We settled on Maria's Ristorante on Summit in Roxborough. The food was outstanding and the price reasonable. It was a very nice place to mark the end of spring break and to spend some much-needed quality time with William.

Amy and Amanda's birthday celebration was tied in with a weekday visit from John. We all met at Amanda's and walked up to Karina's, an Italian-Spanish restaurant on Passyunk. After a great meal it was back to Amanda's for cake, cookies and birthday presents. Amy and Amanda's Birthday 2009

Retirement luncheon (Psychology)

The Villanova Psychology Department hosted a luncheon in my honor at Pond Restaurant in Radnor, PA on January 9th. There was excellent food, company, and conversation. I particularly appreciate the many tributes offered by my fellow faculty. Some were serious, some humorous, many were both. My comments similarly combined these two elements.

One of the highlights of our annual post-Christmas trip to visit Paul's mother in Rhode Island, was taking "Nana" to see the Christmas display at Slater Park. It was the third time in as many days that she had been to the park, but she was no less interested. On this visit we got out and walked around a bit.

Thanksgiving dinner with the family is always a very special occasion. William was away and Alex had a last minute snafu and couldn't make it, but the rest of us gathered around the table to catch up on each other's news and to enjoy the festive meal. This year, in addition to the turkey, we had Brazil nut loaf en croute.

Memorial Day turned out to be glorious weather-wise, and we were glad to be able to share it with our friends. Here are more photos. Alex, William, Kara (Alex’s roommate) and Maggie (Alex’s puppy) came as well. Unfortunately they were involved in a fender-bender on the way back to the city.
